Approaches to English
Our Vision
At Altofts Junior School, it is our vision that every child will develop a love of reading, for both pleasure and information, and as a result, become confident, capable and enthusiastic writers. They will become independent and reflective readers who can read fluently and for meaning. We aim that children will use a variety of reading skills to enable them to access all other areas of learning and acquire a wide range of vocabulary.
Our Aims
We deliver whole class guided reading sessions, using a range of genres and text types, focusing on comprehension skills such as understanding vocabulary in context, retrieving information and using inference.
We plan our curriculum to ensure our children access a rich and varied diet of literature, looking at protagonists of different genders, a range of authors and stories from different cultures.
Children acquire new vocabulary through words of the day, texts used in English and reading sessions, and topic lessons.
They learn to plan, draft, revise and edit, and redraft their writing.
